The clock is ticking.
Recent events, such as the conflicts in Ukraine and Israel, along with Iran's missile actions towards Israel, serve as clear indicators of our current era. These events prompt us to reflect on what lies ahead and compel us to be vigilant.
In 1 Chronicles 12:32, we read about the sons of Issachar, who were renowned for their insight into the signs of their times and their ability to guide Israel wisely. This tribe's reputation stemmed from their deep understanding of the Torah. They showed political foresight and discernment by siding with David when the time was right as tradition shows, the sons of Issachar supported King Saul until they realised God favoured David to be the next king.
Similarly, the early church and the Apostles were keenly aware of their historical moment and acted accordingly. Though often unpopular and risky, their decisions were driven by faith and a commitment to spreading the gospel.
Just as the sons of Issachar and the early church recognised the importance of understanding the times, so too must we, as believers in Christ, be discerning about the world around us. We must cultivate this discernment and let it guide our actions as we navigate the complexities of our present age.
The Church must awaken!
Paul's words in Romans 13:11 serve as a clarion call: "You know what sort of times we live in, and so you should live properly. It is time to wake up. You know that the day when we will be saved is nearer now than when we first put our faith in the Lord." (CEV)
This verse urges us to be spiritually vigilant and morally upright, recognising the imminence of our salvation as the age draws to a close. We are called to shake off spiritual slumber and complacency, abandoning all forms of passivity. Our redemption draws nearer with each passing moment; therefore, we must prepare ourselves diligently, for our Saviour will soon gather us to the Father's house.
An urgent alarm is sounding, rousing believers who have drifted into spiritual dormancy, forgetting the teachings of Scripture regarding surrendering ourselves to God. Now is not the time for God's children to be entangled in worldly pursuits. Decades ago, Paul implored the Romans in chapter 12, verse 1, “to offer themselves as living sacrifices, wholly devoted to God—a reasonable and intelligent act of worship in light of His abundant mercies.”
Paul's message to the believers in Rome resonates with us today, urging us to present our lives as ongoing sacrifices to God—a fundamental aspect of Christian living. Are we truly dedicating our time and resources to God's purposes? It's time to awaken to the reality of our surroundings. We are amidst perilous times, where moral values are distorted, conflicts abound, and true godliness is often overlooked.
In 2 Timothy 3:4, we're cautioned that although we may appear devout, we often lack the transformative power of God in our lives. True godliness comes from knowing and obeying God, living sacrificially, and yielding to His Word. This is the life that prepares us for the imminent return of our Lord Jesus.
I'm urging us as a church to embrace a life of complete reliance on God, trusting Him wholeheartedly and surrendering to His will and leadership. This is crucial for developing a godly character. I feel compelled to emphasize that sitting on the fence is not an option, especially in the current season. Jesus made it clear in Matthew 16:24-26 (ERV) that following Him requires selflessness and a willingness to carry our crosses.
Let's commit ourselves to living for God in this moment, recognizing that our salvation draws nearer with each passing day.
Today, Christ extends His invitation far and wide, beckoning everyone from the highways and byways, even within the walls of our churches. He calls out, "Come to my table of salvation, just as you are, and get to know me more intimately."
To those who are weary and burdened, His invitation is particularly tender. He says, come to me, and I will refresh your life. I am your oasis. All you need to do is align your life with His, trust in Him, and believe in who He is. In return, He grants the strength needed to live the life you were meant for — one abundant with His presence every day.
Blessings.
